EV chargers

Home EV charger installation near Kidderminster

Charge your car on your own driveway, properly. I’m Chris at MHM Electrical & Maintenance. I’m NAPIT registered and Checkatrade 10/10. I survey first, fit it tidily and certify the work.

Charge at home, properly installed

A dedicated home charger is safer and far quicker than running a car off a three-pin plug and an extension lead. It needs its own circuit, the right protection and a sensible cable route. I’ll check that your supply and consumer unit can take the extra load before anything goes on the wall, so it works first time and doesn’t trip the house.

What’s included

Survey first

I look at your board, earthing, incoming supply and where the car parks, then give you an honest view on what’s needed. That includes telling you if your board needs work first.

Neat installation

A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to the charger, with the cable run kept tidy and as short as is sensible. Driveway, garage or side wall.

Tested and certified

Tested before I leave, with the certificate for the new circuit. I’ll also show you how the charger and its app work.

How it works

You speak to me from the first call to the handover.

Call or message

Tell me your town, the car, where you’d like the charger and, if you have one already, the charger model.

Survey and quote

I check the supply and board, agree the position and cable route, and give you a clear quote.

Install

Usually a single visit. Power will be off for part of it while I connect the new circuit.

Handover

Testing, certificate and a quick run-through, so you can plug in that evening.

Worth checking before you buy a charger

  • Where the car parks, and how far that is from your consumer unit
  • Whether the charger needs to be tethered (cable attached) or untethered (socket only)
  • If you’re on a tariff with cheaper overnight rates, a smart charger can schedule charging for you
  • Older fuse boards may need upgrading first. I’ll tell you honestly if yours does
  • Your electricity network operator may need to be told about the new charger. I’ll explain what applies to your home

Commercial & workplace EV charging

I also install EV chargers for businesses, workplaces, car parks, landlords and blocks of flats, from a single staff charger to multi-charger sites. Each job is planned around your supply and how the chargers will actually be used.

  • Site survey to agree charger positions, cable routes and how many chargers the site needs
  • Supply and load checks on the incoming supply and distribution, so extra chargers don’t overload the site
  • Groundworks coordination for ducting, trenching or bases where cables need to cross a car park
  • Testing and certification for all new circuits, with notification to the network operator where it applies
  • Suitable for workplaces, shops, car parks, rental properties and shared parking at blocks of flats

Common questions

Can I just charge my car from a normal plug socket?

You can use a three-pin plug occasionally, but it’s slow and puts a long, heavy load on a socket that wasn’t designed for it. A dedicated charger on its own circuit is the safer option for everyday charging.

Do I need a new fuse board for an EV charger?

Not always. It depends on the age and condition of your consumer unit and how much spare capacity it has. I check this during the survey and will only recommend an upgrade if it’s genuinely needed.

Can you fit a charger I’ve already bought?

Often, yes. Send me the make and model when you get in touch and I’ll confirm it’s suitable for your property before booking.

How long does installation take?

Most home installations are done in a single visit. Longer cable runs, or a board that needs work, can add time, and I’ll tell you that up front.

Where can the charger go?

Usually on an outside wall next to where you park, or inside a garage. We’ll agree the best spot during the survey, based on your parking and the cable route.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. The new circuit is tested and you get the electrical certificate for the work. I’m a NAPIT registered electrician.

Do you install EV chargers for businesses and car parks?

Yes. As well as homes, I install chargers for businesses, workplaces, car parks, landlords and blocks of flats, including sites with several chargers. Every job starts with a site survey so the design suits the supply and how the chargers will be used.

What’s involved in a commercial or multi-charger installation?

I survey the site, check the incoming supply and the likely load from all the chargers, plan the cable routes and coordinate any groundworks needed for ducting or mounting. Once installed, everything is tested and certified, and I’ll explain whether the network operator needs to be told.
